is it as random, as simply liking a song, or getting a good deal? or is it more in depth than that? This is something that really fascinates me as Music Business Major and Musician, respond at your leisure though. <3 Jake
but none of them will ever use it. Because getting a degree in Music Business isn’t a piece of paper that says “I get to hang out with band dudes now” It’s actually knowing the industry, staying ahead of trends, knowing how to market an artist, and making a difference, to spotlight the music you believe in.
let’s start with facts:
Mayday Parade: pop rock band from Florida
Number of Records Sold: 300,000 +
Record Label: Atlantic (Warner Music Group)
Fan base/core Demographic: white suburban youths, ages 9-25.
Strengths: catchy as fuck, big budget funding, great production, co writers, devoted fans, relate-able lyrics, decent live. (decent, not excellent).
Weaknesses: Where’s Jason? Cheesy, Derek Sanders lack of actual Charisma, doing covers,
Mayday Parade’s new video is weird, let’s be honest here. HOWEVER, to me it feels so much more real than anything I’ve watched recently in their genre or even out of their genre. In a time where the homogenization of music and their corresponding video’s is almost ultimate; it’s nice to not see another video of a band playing their jams in some abandoned, grungy, but somehow still really nice looking building while hoards of fans jump up and down gayly. The video, somewhat accurately depicts American youth in lust. That reckless, carefree summer time attitude that almost everyone has felt at sometime. How is this video even remotely pornographic? whoever’s calling this porn has clearly never seen a frame. Almost all of the nude shots are tasteful, quick and 100% unlikely to cause arousal in anyone. Is this risky for Mayday? not really. They’ve already made two TV/Kid friendly videos for this album, and while I like “Kids In Love” I don’t think it’s going to be a number one smash. Kids will still like the song, parents probably won’t care. as if mayday hasn’t reference sex before (“we made love by the ocean”) or you know, any other band. Video’s don’t always have to be completely catered towards television. The video is doing exactly what it’s suppose to be doing, it’s getting people talking. People that normally don’t flap their opinionated gums at past their prime pop rock bands(oh hey, Meeeee).
Controversy is publicities best friend. If we’ve learned anything from Lady Gaga. Mayday Parade took a gamble. and I applaud them for it. It’s off the beaten path, and is at minimum refreshing to watch. The very fact that I’m writing THIS long of a blog about it is proof that they did something right.
